How it started
Raldek is an innovative venture established by Derek Shiels in 2021, leveraging his three decades of experience in the Hospitality Sector. With a background in kitchen design, bar design, and grease management, Derek identified an opportunity for improvement.
“I realised that some of the current solutions available could possibly be improved, more efficient, more cost effective”
Armed with a multitude of ideas, his goal was to transform these concepts into functional products. His journey began with devising a streamlined solution to tackle the issue of coffee grounds blocking the drainage systems—an issue of great concern for water companies and businesses.
How it's going
During the lockdown period, he utilised his time to create and refine Raldek's first product, the Compact Coffee Catcher.
This innovation serves the purpose of preventing the coffee grounds from drip trays infiltrating drainage systems, a concern that can lead to blockages and subsequent penalties.
The design introduces a pioneering approach: a compact, counter-mounted coffee grounds catcher, a global first. This design effectively addresses the issues experienced in current under-counter models.
Raldek was recognised by Innovate NI, on behalf of the Department for the Economy, as a Gold Level Innovator for the design!
